In 2003, prototyping began on the newest instrument in the Schilke line, the first production trombone in company history. Although the Schilke company has previously built a handful of trombones, the ST20 would be the first full production line, designed and built from Schilke parts entirely within the Melrose Park, IL manufacturing facility. Designed around an Axial Flow valve with stainless steel rotor, the ST20 tenor trombones feature .547” large bore, 8.5” hand hammered bells, interchangeable leadpipes, adjustable wood grain thumb rest, nickel silver chrome plated inner slide tubes, and yellow brass outer slide tubes with nickel over sleeves. Like their trumpets, Schilke trombones are custom built by master craftsmen with the same attention to detail and exacting standards as a small custom maker. Rather than producing instruments in “production runs”, instruments are built to order with dealer-selected options. Not only does this ensure that careful attention is given to each instrument built, but it ensures that dealers are able to tailor their trombone to regional preferences in bell material, tuning slide bows, and other parameters.
