All Holton French horns, including the single and double models, feature valve rotors that are tapered. This is so that as the valve wears, it automatically seats itself. This includes the bearing surfaces axles on each end of the valve and the bearing plates. All of their bells are made with overlapped seams. This is much more durable than one made with a butt seam. It also produces a better tone and timbre. This is one of the outstanding characteristics on which Holton French horns developed their reputation. They feature four different sizes of bell throats, small, medium, large, and extra large. All are hand hammered with slightly varying diameters.

H177 / H277:
This is a versatile horn quite appropriate for high school and college marching band and orchestral performance. The model H177 offers a mouthpipe with a .310" Venturi for a bright, compact feel and sound. It includes a hand-fitted rotary valve system, string linkage, separate Bb tuning slide and change lever designed to fit the thumb in a natural position. The nickel silver material is extremely corrosion resistant. It has a .468” bore, a 12.25” medium throat hand hammered bell, tapered rotors and bearing, and solid nickel silver inner and outer slides. The model H277 has all the above features plus a detachable screw bell.

H178 / H278:
Bright, compact feel and sound with outstanding tonal beauty. Bell proportions provide a dark but singing tone with fine legato characteristics. Yellow brass produces a higher tone color with more overtones and clearer projection. Capable of playing pianissimo staccato notes sensitively, clearly and evenly. This is an excellent horn for chamber orchestra. It has a .468” bore, a 12.25” medium throat hand hammered bell, yellow brass construction, tapered rotors and bearing, a water key on the mouthpipe, and solid nickel silver inner and outer slides. The model H278 has all the above features plus a detachable screw bell.

H179 / H279:
The solid nickel silver edition of the H178, model H179 has especially good center and projection. This free-blowing horn features a rich, dark sound designed especially for the "big horn" artist; the tapered tubing and throat of the bell are larger for a bigger, darker tone. The bell flare produces a mellow, velvety tone plus a little overtone of a ringing quality. Hard nickel silver responds quickly and sounds brighter up close. This is the most popular Farkas model. It has a .468” bore, a 12.25” large throat hand hammered bell, nickel silver construction, tapered rotors and bearing, a water key on the mouthpipe, and solid nickel silver inner and outer slides. The model H279 has all the above features plus a detachable screw bell.

H180 / H280:
This horn is free-blowing with rich and resonant intonation. The bell and branch are made of a special brass alloy for a slightly darker coloring of tone. With good projection the H180 is an excellent orchestral horn with dark sound and bright overtones. It has a .468” bore, a 12.25” large throat hand hammered bell, yellow brass construction, tapered rotors and bearing, a water key on the mouthpipe, and solid nickel silver inner and outer slides. The model H280 has all the above features plus a detachable screw bell.

H181 / H281:
The model H181 features a bronze bell that produces a darker sound. Capable of a wide range of dynamics, it can be played loud without a brassy edge to the sound. It has a .468” bore, a 12.25” large throat hand hammered bronze bell, solid brass bow and branches, tapered rotors and bearing, a water key on the mouthpipe, and solid nickel silver inner and outer slides. The model H281 has all the above features plus a detachable screw bell.

H189 / H289:
Those hornists who want an instrument that provides great volume and sonorous tone without sacrificing control in the upper register need look no further. By combining an extra-large-throated bell and branch with the innovative Merker dual bore, the H189 offers the best of both worlds. It produces a tone that is exceptionally full, with rich depth that retains its core and timbre qualities. At the same time, it enables the artist to reach those difficult high notes with greater ease and accuracy. The horn also features the versatility of the independent Bb/F tuning system, as found on our finest Holton models, along with the adjustable finger hook and heavyweight valve caps that are a standard feature on all Merker-Matic horns. Tapers within the instrument are compared to that of the Conn 8D. It has a .468”/.460” dual bore, a 12” extra large throat hand hammered bell, solid nickel silver construction, adjustable finger hook, independent F/Bb tuning , tapered rotors and bearing, traditional string linkage, and a water key on the mouthpipe and third slide. H105:
The world's finest French horn just got better; the new H105 replaces Holton's previous H104 flagship model. The pursuit of perfection has created a new-generation French horn known for its performance and superb intonation. The H105's technological and acoustical flexibility enables the artist to perform accurately in a wide range of performance situations. It features a Kruspe wrap. Its two interchangeable mouth pipes with newly developed tapers make it easy to switch between work in small chamber ensembles and large symphony orchestras. The small Venturi mouthpipe is more focused for chamber orchestra and high-register work. The large Venturi mouthpipe is more free blowing, creating an excellent orchestral horn. The specially tempered red brass bell produces a rich, dark sound capable of great volume without getting brassy. It has a .468” bore, a 12” large throat hand hammered bronze detachable bell, nickel silver body, two leadpipes, tapered rotors and bearing, a reversible fourth rotor from F/Bb to Bb/F, a water key on the mouthpipe, and solid nickel silver inner and outer slides.

H378 / H379:
The H378 has similar playing characteristics to those of the H178, with a bright, compact feel and sound. Yellow brass produces a higher tone color with more overtones for clearer projection. It is capable of playing pianissimo staccato notes clearly and evenly. It features the same parts as the H178, but with some braces, pull rings and medallion removed. The F auxiliary slide is not detachable, and the valve caps are plated and not jeweled, but this is a professional horn at a cost effective price. It has a .468” bore, a 12.25” medium throat hand hammered bell, yellow brass construction, tapered rotors and bearing, and solid nickel silver inner and outer slides.
